A trouble-maker
I don't understand why everybody was starving - Rob, Carol, and Sylvia had gone to the fish market at Tsukiji that morning and had, I suppose, lots and lots of sushi and sashimi. Lillian and I had eaten some of that crustless spinach quiche here at the TEAM Center. Oh - maybe it was because the sashimi was served like at 6am or something?
Anyway, we went to this place that had "kushi-yaki" on the sign. We went in and there wasn't any! There was niku-tofu, aji-fry, tempura. With the niku-tofu, they served a raw egg. We talked about salmonella, and then we got to the interesting part.
While Rob and Shigeru were working together (I don't remember if this was in the Japan Church Growth Institute - JCGI - days, or afterwards with CRM), there was this expensive consultant they had brought in, and there was a limited period of time for this guy, and things were moving slowly... when all of a sudden, Shigeru said, "Could I ask a question?"
Rob said, "Sure," while thinking "maybe this'll help move things along."
Shigeru asked, "What is the church?" Troublemaker.
But what felt like a sidetrack turned out to be a very important discussion.
So, back to the present. Carol asked Shigeru about his current answer. Are you ready? "Those who have been called out by God." With this definition, the phrase "going to church" doesn't make much sense.
Was it Lombardi who started off each coaching season with "Gentlemen, this is a football"? We really need to have these basic things nailed down. Please pray for church leaders in Japan, both leaders of local congregations as well as organizations like CRM and JEMA, that they will have clarity on the fundamentals.
Sylvia and Rob went to Ochanomizu and had a good time there. Perhaps we'll get a report on that later.
